As we enjoy the longer days in the British sunshine, some of us will be venturing to music festivals up and down the country. Celebrations like Glastonbury, Creamfields, Reading and Leeds will attract thousands of music fans from across the UK.

Festivals are a time to have fun, and it’s important to remember key safety tips to ensure that you keep yourself and those around you safe and healthy this summer.

Imperative Training has compiled some tips to help you keep safe this Festival Season.

Stay hydrated

It’s easy to forget while losing yourself in the fun and music, that keeping yourself hydrated with plenty of water is vital - especially in the heat.

Signs of dehydration include tiredness, dizziness,a dry mouth, lips and eyes and dark yellow urine. If left untreated it can cause unconsciousness and even death in severe cases.

While at a festival, aim to drink between 8-15 cups of water a day and drink water after every alcoholic beverage.

Protect yourself from the sun

Being out in the hot sun for hours at a time can be hazardous to your health if you’re not careful. Exposure to prolonged sunlight can lead to sunburn, dehydration and even sunstroke.

Official government advice recommends wearing a wide-brimmed hat, regularly applying suncream of at least factor 15 and using an after-sun lotion.

Drink responsibly

While alcohol is often a big part of festivals and summer parties, it is important to take care with your drinking and stay safe.

Tips include eating a meal before you begin drinking, stay in groups with people you know, and always avoid taking drinks from strangers while keeping an eye on your own drinks.

Brush up on your first aid skills

Even when taking every step to stay safe, accidents can happen. That’s why it is vital to have basic first aid skills at least, this can include dealing with burns, small cuts or bruises, and choking.

Know where your nearest defibrillator is

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is one of the leading causes of death among young people in the UK., with around 60,000 SCAs taking place in the country every year.

Sadly, around 90% of people who suffer Sudden Cardiac Arrest currently die due to lack of knowledge on how to react, and lack of defibrillator infrastructure. Defibrillators are now becoming increasingly available and accepted as a key part of first aid equipment.

You can view your nearest defibrillator online through a website called the Circuit, this site also details hours of availability and whether the defibrillator is accessible to the public. You can view this here.

Check on your friends regularly

It’s likely that you and your friends will be drinking alcohol and could easily become separated in the crowds. Make sure that you have a way to contact each other in an emergency and stay in touch regularly when not together.
