If there’s anything that Olympic athlete Zoe Gillings-Brier has taught us it’s that safety is paramount when competing in an extreme sport such as snowboarding.

Zoe recognises that training to a high level of intensity can put a real strain on your ticker and the importance of safeguarding against cardiac arrest in the same way you would carry a first aid kit to treat a wound or broken bones. For this reason, Zoe reached out to us in search of a life-saving defibrillator to protect herself and her team when on the slopes and travelling to competitions.

If you’re participating in extreme sports it’s useful to familiarise yourself with AED access points at sport centres and gyms as well as develop your understanding of how to treat injuries to protect yourself and others.

But where do you start? Well, the purpose of this blog post is to educate you about different first aid methods to master before you even think about scaling that wall or whizzing down the ski slopes, so first things first....
Are you beach safety ready?

At the first sign of sunshine, a large quantity of the population will be prodding their bellies questioning “when will I be beach body ready?” when the question on everyone’s lips should be “am I beach safety ready?”

In the same way that you would divide your clothes between two suitcases to make sure that if one goes missing you won’t have to bare all, it’s wise to prepare for medical emergencies so that nothing gets in the way of your fun and relaxation.

Broadening your knowledge of injuries that are more likely to occur whilst you’re frolicking on the beach or taking a leisurely stroll, will allow you to treat them correctly making sure that the injury is less likely to become susceptible to infection, ensuring a speedy recovery.

After spending weeks eating clean, you finally feel ready to show off your new bikini.  Rubber ring in hand, you take a deep breath and you’re ready to step out of your towel and strut your stuff. Wait - “ow, ow, ow!” the hot tiles beneath you create a searing pain that sends you into a tiptoeing frenzy until you nose dive into the pool – not cool!

It just goes to show how the intense heat of the sun can build up and cause some real damage, imagine the effects of this on your poor skin!

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation is the process we use to maintain the blood flow around the body and to keep the heart in a shockable rhythm ready for the arrival of a defibrillator.
The ratio of chest compressions to rescue breaths during CPR is 30:2.
